An introduction to sound tech for clubnight and event organisers - creating caring and inclusive environments for everyone, working on and off stage

GRIP is open to everyone, but aims to welcome more women, non-binary and transgender people into the field of sound engineering.

Elaine Maltezos will give an introduction to her own journey as a sound engineer, as well as her ambitions and solutions for building a cultural scene which is more identity-aware and actively inclusive of more women, non-binary and transgender technicians.

Elaine will also give a hands-on, step-by-step introduction to setting up for a club night, rigging DJ decks and how to translate a technical rider. Together we´ll set up for the ASTERISK club night, which takes place at Bergen Kjøtt on Friday 26. november!

No previous experience necessary. Newness, nerves and questions are welcomed!

Elaine Maltezos is a freelance recording and live sound engineer based in Bergen, Norway. Her main area of career focus today is acoustic music recording, as well as being a live sound engineer for both music and theater. She was born in Chicago, and grew up playing viola in orchestra. Becoming a singer-songwriter led her further to an undergrad program at University of Miami with a music engineering focus, before switching over to complete her degree in music composition and studio music production. After moving to Norway in 2013, she completed a postgraduate degree at University in Stavanger, where she published an article in the Audio Engineering Society exploring orchestra 9.1 immersive sound recording. Elaine has recorded and worked with several acoustic ensembles, artists, and festivals, including Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester, Bergen Nasjonale Opera, Bit20 Ensemble, Michael Barnes Oktett, Leif Ove Andsnes, Edvard Grieg Kor, Borealis Festivalen, Festspillene i Bergen, Rosendal Kammermusikkfestivalen, and many others.

GRIP is part of a new initiative at Bergen Kjøtt to empower a greater diversity of people with technical competence and confidence in Vestland. In collaboration with different cultural organisations and technicians, Bergen Kjøtt aims to provide long-term, practical training, experience and guidance in sound engineering.

GRIP is a collaborative project developed so far with BIT Teatergarasjen, Carte Blanche, AKKS Bergen and sound engineer Irene Bjørke.
