ZIP FRICTION : MA1 exhibition

  • Bergen Kjøtt 1 Skutevikstorget Bergen, Vestland, 5032 Norway (map)

For 3 weeks (1 – 20 May), artists studying in the first-year Fine Art Masters program (MA1) at Fakultet for kunst, musikk og design, UiB took over Bergen Kjøtt for a collaborative residency, resulting in an exhibition open to the public 15 - 19 May.

Like a zip, the artists have had to find their own place in the group, the system, and the exhibition. They’ve had to negotiate the frictions of the process, to bring together separate ideas and make them into one. In a year defined by distance and being apart, the project is rooted in a desire to find ways to come together and know each other: what do we want to learn, what do we have to offer and how do we involve each other?

Organized by the MA1 artists, the takeover has taken form in collective cooking sessions, discussions with invited artists, screenings, publication-making, and events both at Bergen Kjøtt and online, culminating in a collectively curated, evolving exhibition. The project is an experiment in building a safe, supportive, and shared community(s) for individual and collective learning, working, and exhibiting.
