Welcome to the second evening of The Supplementary School Film Club. Bergen based artist, Nora Adwan has selected this months film: Palestinian director Elia Suleiman's 2002 film Divine Intervention.
Divine Intervention is a surreal black comedy, a series of interconnected sketches set in the town of Nazareth. The film won the Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the "Palme d'Or" award.
"In Nazareth, under a guise of banal normalcy, the town embraces folly. Under pressure from his failing business, a man takes matters into his own hands and tries to break a chain reaction of petty feuds. He breaks down himself. The man is E.S.' father. A love story takes place between a Palestinian man living in Jerusalem and a Palestinian woman from Ramallah. The man - E.S. - shifts between his ailing father and his love life, trying to keep both alive. Because of the political situation, the woman's freedom of movement ends at the Israeli army checkpoint between the two cities. Barred from crossing, the lovers' intimate encounters take place on a deserted lot right beside the checkpoint. The lovers are unable to exempt reality from occupation. They are unable to preserve their intimacy in the face of a siege. A complicity of solemn desire begins to generate violent repercussions and against the odds, their angry hearts counter-attack with spasms of spectacular fantasy."
Nora Adwan is a visual artist, living in Bergen. Adwan has a bachelor's degree in art from Kingston University, London, and a Master's degree in art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergen. Adwan works across disciplines with installation, sculpture, text, photography and sound. The elements link together to create layered experiences. Thematically, her work deals with questions related to how identity, memory and body are affected by a life in exile with a focus on women's narratives and perspectives. Her stories are conveyed through a combination of poetry, fiction and documentary, where translation and the change of language are used as central elements. Her work is often in close collaboration with other artists, both in visual art, performing arts and music.

The Supplementary School Film Club is an intersectional film club hosted by artist, Amber Ablett where we prioritise the stories, needs and comfort of those marginalised by our society. We watch films together to look at the intersections of oppressive structures and how different communities tackle and dismantle them.
The SSFC takes direct inspiration from The Black Supplementary School Movement begun in 1960s Britain by West Indian communities to fill the gaps about the breadth of the British experience and history left out by mainstream education. Season Two takes place on a Thursday each month for the first six months of the year at Bergen Kjøtt.
